VFD in Art Form
Below are photos of an art exhibit by Mark Hansen and Ben Ruben exhibited last year at New York's Whitney Museum and Brooklyn's Academy of Music.
It is an installation of 200 little VFD computer screens that displays text from internet chat rooms and translates them into sound. The screens pulse and flash with fragments of texts captures at random and in real time from thousands of world wide chat rooms, bulletin boards and other public forums creating a sequence of ever-changing messages and patterns of moving text.
The curtain of computer screens is the canvas-an electronic one. Here is the grid format, one of the fundamental compositional devices of abstract painting. From The Wall Street Journal Feb 14, 2003 by Eric Gibson
